Hi. Sage here. This month I decided it was time we had a serious talk about me.

I was five years old when my whole world went quiet.

One day my person was there. His boots by the door, his laugh rumbling through the house, his hand scratching that perfect spot behind my ear. And then he wasn’t. The house felt still. I waited by the door because that’s what good dogs do. I listened for his truck. I kept my nose pointed toward the driveway just in case. But the truck never came.
Strangers did. Kind voices. Gentle hands. They clipped on a leash that wasn’t his and took me to a place that smelled like bleach and fear and too many stories at once. The humane society.
Dogs barked from every direction. Metal doors clanged. I tried to be brave, but I didn’t understand why I was there or why my person hadn’t said goodbye.
People walked by my kennel every day. Little kids squealed over the puppies with oversized paws and wiggly bodies. I get it. Puppies are cute. I used to be one. But I wasn’t anymore. I was five. I already knew how to sit and stay and wait. I didn’t jump. I didn’t chew shoes. I just watched people pass and wiggled when someone slowed down.
Most of them didn’t.

Then one day, she did.

She crouched down and looked right at me. “Hi, handsome,” she said. I pressed my nose between the bars and breathed her in. She smelled like coffee and paper and something warm.

She came back the next day. And the next.

The day she clipped a leash to my collar and said, “Let’s go home,” I tried to walk calmly. I really did. But my wiggle betrayed me.

Home was different. But it was good. She put a bed by hers. She talked to me while she made dinner. And every morning, she took me with her. I had my own spot at work. People scratched my ears and called me the best boy. We became a team.

I still remember my first person. I always will.

But my heart learned something important. It can break and still make room.

I wasn’t a puppy anymore. I was something better.

I was exactly the dog she needed. And she was exactly the person I’d been waiting for.
